Keith's collecting glasses, he waltzes across the floor In his mind he's twenty-one, it's 1954 Karen reads a magazine that takes her far away The band are playing for twenty per cent, tomorrow's another day Henry plays the card machine, he's got nothing else to do The best pool player in the world has just missed his cue The cars out on the highway they've all got somewhere to go The music spills out to the street, the barman stubs his toe ... and he says Things could be better, things could be so much worse It's all a part of the mysterious universe The singer's taking it all in but he's running out of air The guitar player's holding back until he's outta there The drummer's looking wild-eyed like he's back from a war The bassist plays relentless, he's seen it all before ... and he says Things could be better, things could be so much worse, It's all a part of the mysterious universe See the blonde girl dancing all alone all through the second verse As I chord the strings of her mysterious universe In her eyes I see her lifetime from cradle to the hearse Bursting with hope for the mysterious universe No time for wondering who'll be last and who will get there first Our destination: the mysterious universe So many questions even though you know they’re just a curse Won't make no difference to the mysterious universe Last drinks, we're closing – lights on, it's time to grab your purse And move out into the mysterious universe Goodnight, everybody. Pleasant dreams.

Cameo 02:58
CAMEO (by David Levell) Well here's the sunset we've been riding into We're out of the picture and I haven't got a clue And here's the silence after the applause There won't be any sequels and there won't be no encores Now some count their blessings, some count their mistakes Some read between the lines and some pray for second takes But there's no credits gonna roll across a screen To tell you who to blame, to explain what things mean Had a dream in black and white Shades of grey and day for night Saved the world with a single fight and I flew .... Happy ever after one and all Heroes stand and villains fall I heard the cavalry's trumpet call, didn't you ? Well here's the sunset we've been riding into I hope it's what you wanted, I hope you enjoy the view

Lo & Behold 04:06
LO & BEHOLD (by David Levell) Lo and behold, lo and behold All you’ve been sold, only fool’s gold And it’s shining, and it’s shining and it’s shining, but it’s lying And it’s shining, and it’s shining and it’s shining, but it’s lying Lo and behold, lo and behold Wolf in the fold, breaking the mold Have you been told? Have you been told? All of your gold, won’t keep out the cold Lo and behold, lo and behold The truth will unfold, about all that gold

SHARE A DREAM (by David Levell) I'd like to say just what I mean When I feel beyond the scene Imprisoned by what might have been And by what always will The ghosts of everyone I've lost They turned my burning mind to frost I couldn't stop to count the cost Although I stood so still And as I sat there on the fence My thoughts turned back in my defence Until I felt they made no sense And I longed to fly free This mysterious universe Is half a blessing and it's half a curse Don't wait for it to just get worse Whatever will be will be There's songs of hate and songs of love And songs that kick and push and shove Our hopes that fall from far above And quickly lose their gleam I'd like to take you by the hand I'd like to make you understand That everything I've ever planned Was just to share a dream

about

Toe-tappin', navel-gazin', star-watchin', bush-walkin', alley-cattin', string-strummin', harp-blowin' kinda kosmic country, dark space and green forest, for people with roots, and antennas (or antennae...). Recorded at the height of last summer's heat and now falling into some kind of world while autumn rains red leaves and winter's shadow stirs. So many questions, even though you know they're just a curse... it's all part of the mysterious universe...

A note on the songs...
MYSTERIOUS UNIVERSE is mostly true. Keith the publican really did waltz around the tables collecting the empties, Karen often read magazines at the bar and a pool player did make that extravagant claim. The band, as described, saw it all and will swear to it on a stack of bibles and a bucket of buzzards.
CAMEO features a harmonica solo and goes back a way. What happens when over the hill is far from the end of the road? When the movie is over? When everything is over?
LO & BEHOLD, an early, some would say primitive, mandolin composition which vies to be a rousing knee-slapper and indeed is when striking punters in the right mood. It ain't 12 bar blues but has a similar feel, methinks.
SHARE A DREAM has enjoyed several incarnations and here comes to life, like Frankenstein on the slab, revived by a mandolin riff.
